Giclèe Printing: Producing Fine Art

Giclee printing process

Giclèe Printing pronounced as ‘Gee-Clay’, this art can be used to imply digital paintwork or drawing reproductions done by software such as Adobe Photoshop, Creative Cloud, or Illustrator. Coined in 1991 by Jack Duganne, an American printmaker, Giclée printing is a unique type of inkjet printing used in producing high quality prints that last longer than those from the typical desktop inkjet printer. This term was used to describe the squirting or spitting nature in which ink was poured to paper or substrate used in its printing. Giclée prints are of superior quality, greater resolutions, and pricier than normal prints because of the paper, resolution level, and quality of ink used. For a document to be considered a Giclée print, there are certain factors it has to meet. The image resolution should be greater than 300 DPI and the paper or substrate to be used should be of archival quality. Lastly, the printing must be done by pigment-based inks. Due to their costly inputs and picture quality, their prints can be exorbitantly priced.

Giclèe printing requires an equally greater quality of file to use in producing the print. This should be of at least 300 DPI for the sharpest of detail devoid of any fragmentations that can be common to normal prints. The paper to print on should be acid-free, rag base, or 100 percent cotton and of archival quality to allow a detailed reproduction of the image or artwork. Archival quality papers give the prints a 10-time longevity unlike others which de-color after a decade. Giclée printing paper is normally marked for quality, making it easier to note.

The image used determines the paper’s brightness, hence determining the quality of the print. A brighter paper is used for bolder and brighter colors, while low brightness is used for low-light colors. Artists use pigment-based ink in Giclée printing for a longer lifespan. Giclèe prints are superior to normal prints because their offset lithography process uses four colors. They are convenient since their cartridges can hold up to 12 different colors. They also have a quicker turnaround time and allow for easier color corrections. Lastly, it is crucial to ensure the resolutions on your image are standard and whether they can comfortably fit the paper’s space. This will guarantee a reproduction that is detailed and identical to your image’s resolution.

In summary, Giclèe printing is a must-have for top-notch printing. Incorporating this will raise your game and boost your wide-format printer service. Contact All Copy Products for to learn more.
